New Climate Scheme Window Opens

Farmers across Ireland can now apply for environmental upgrade grants under the ACRES Co-operation approach, as the application window for Non-Productive Investments (NPIs) officially opens.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, made the announcement today and encouraged farmers to work with their ACRES advisors to improve the environmental quality of their land and increase their potential payments.
“There are a wide range of actions available,” the Minister said. “These investments can enhance biodiversity and water quality while also raising the score of farmed land under the scheme.”
This is the third year of the NPI application process, which supports eco-friendly actions such as creating habitats, installing wildlife features, or managing sensitive land more sustainably. While these actions do not directly boost productivity, they contribute to higher environmental scores and increased payment rates.
Applications are submitted by ACRES advisors on behalf of farmers. The deadline is Friday, October 17. The earlier opening this year allows advisors to align applications with on-site assessments already taking place during the summer and early autumn.
Over 4,800 farmers submitted NPI applications in 2024, up from the previous year. Many of those projects are now being implemented following Department approval. The claims system for completed NPIs is also open, with payments due to begin in October.
The NPIs are part of the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES), which forms a central pillar of Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan for 2023 to 2027. The scheme is jointly funded by the European Union and the Irish government and focuses on supporting sustainable farming practices in high-priority geographical zones.
