Enniscorthy Faces Overnight Water Cuts as Hosepipe Bans Widen

Uisce Éireann has confirmed that overnight water restrictions will be in place in Enniscorthy tonight (Thursday) due to a burst water main and critically low reservoir levels caused by sustained high demand on the local supply.

Water will be cut off from 11pm until 6am Friday, with normal supply expected to take two to three hours to return in some areas, particularly on higher ground or at the edges of the network.

The announcement comes on the same day Uisce Éireann extended hosepipe bans to four counties—Waterford, Tipperary, Wexford, and Cork (excluding Cork City)—effective from Saturday, July 26, until September 16. The bans are part of Water Conservation Orders now covering seven regions, aimed at curbing non-essential water use as river and groundwater sources remain at historically low levels despite recent rainfall.

Padraig Lyng, Uisce Éireann’s Water Operations Manager for Wexford, said: “We appreciate the inconvenience caused by overnight restrictions, but they are essential to maintain daytime supply while we allow reservoir levels to recover.”

Uisce Éireann is implementing emergency conservation measures across affected regions and is urging the public to reduce usage wherever possible. A water conservation tool is available at water.ie to help households track and reduce their consumption.

Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann will be contacted directly about outages exceeding four hours. Registration is available on the Vulnerable Customers section of the website.

For real-time updates, customers are encouraged to follow @IWCare and @IrishWater on X, visit the Uisce Éireann website, or contact the 24/7 helpline at 1800 278 278. A free text alert service is also available for local updates by registering an Eircode and mobile number online.
