ESB Urges Public to Avoid Swimming in Reservoirs

Reservoir-1200x675 ESB Urges Public to Avoid Swimming in Reservoirs

The ESB has issued a fresh warning to the public against swimming in any of its reservoirs during the August Bank Holiday weekend, as dry and mild weather is expected to draw more people outdoors on Saturday and Sunday.

The utility is urging the public to be aware of the serious risks associated with entering these waters, which are not suitable for recreational use. Henry Bouchier, Manager of Hydro Operations at ESB, said it is vital that people pay attention to the clear safety signage in place around all ESB hydroelectric sites. He warned that deep and fast-flowing water, sudden changes in water levels, and uneven underwater terrain can create highly dangerous conditions for swimmers.

“It is important that people take note of the safety warnings which are visible on signs posted around ESB reservoirs. These areas are unsafe for swimming due to deep, fast-flowing waters, fluctuating water levels, and uneven terrain, which present significant hazards to the public,” he said.

“To ensure your safety and the safety of others, always choose safer swimming locations such as swimming pools or beaches with designated lifeguards,” he added.

Among the areas highlighted in the warning are Poulaphouca in County Wicklow, Golden Falls and Leixlip in County Kildare, Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid in County Cork, the Ardnacrusha headrace and tailrace canal in County Clare, and Assaroe, Lough Nacung and Lough Dunlewey in County Donegal.

The ESB is reminding the public that these locations are operational facilities and not designed for public access or leisure use.
