Taoiseach Attends UN Ocean Conference in Nice

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is in Nice, France, this week for the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), joining global leaders to address the future of the world’s oceans.
On Sunday evening, the Taoiseach attended the official inauguration of the Conference’s ‘Green Zone,’ an event hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. The gathering drew more than 60 heads of state and government from across the globe.
Today, Mr Martin is expected to participate in the launch of the EU Ocean Pact, a key event hosted by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen alongside President Macron. He will also deliver Ireland’s national statement during the main plenary session of the conference.
In addition to conference events, the Taoiseach will hold several bilateral meetings, including discussions with King Abdullah II of Jordan, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley, and U.S. climate envoy Secretary John Kerry.
Speaking ahead of his engagements, the Taoiseach said: “I look forward to joining with fellow world leaders over the coming days to discuss and collaborate on ways to secure the future of our oceans and seas. As an island , Ireland is keenly aware of the importance of the marine environment and the other roles our waters play, including as a vital trade route.”
UNOC3 brings together international stakeholders to drive action on ocean protection, sustainable use of marine resources, and climate resilience.
