1951: A search operation based out of Shannon Airport discovers the wreckage of a US Air Force C124 which crashed into the sea with 53 persons on board, approximately 450 miles off the west coast of Ireland.
1966: Mystery surrounds a large explosion heard in the middle of the night over Dublin with some claiming the sound was the result of a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere.
1976: Senior Officer of the Meteorological Service, William Mann announces that a new training centre for meteorologists is to be set up in Galway, which will integrate professional training with university courses.
1981: The Wicklow Mountains are hit by heavy snowfall.
2002: Thirty-nine whales are washed onto Aughcasla Strand, in the Dingle Peninsula at high tide.
2013: Snow showers affect Ulster and north Leinster with temperatures dropping to -2°C to 2°C. Up to 10cm is reported in the Mourne Mountains.
