A timeline of notable weather events and extremes that have taken place in Ireland on August 5th throughout history.
1975: A spell of warm weather triggers thunderstorms across northern and eastern counties.
1985: Following one of the wettest Julys on record, close to an inch of rain falls in the west and south, adding to already saturated ground and causing localised flooding.
1995: Temperatures soar into the mid to high 20s across Ireland as the long, hot summer continues. Hospital emergency departments report a surge in cases of sunburn and heat exhaustion.
1997: Clean-up operations continue in the village of Blackwater, Co Wexford, after severe flooding. Over 36 hours of heavy rain, combined with a high tide, causes the River Blackwater to rise to its highest level in years.
2003: Heatwave conditions develop as Shannon and Mullingar record maximum temperatures of 29°C.
2013: Heavy rainfall affects the southeast, with Oak Park in Carlow reporting over an inch of rain.
2021: Mullingar, Co Westmeath records 71.1 mm of rain — its highest daily rainfall total for August in 71 years.
2023: Storm Antoni brings very heavy rain to the northern half of the country, leading to some flooding. The strongest winds are mostly confined to the south.
