1959 – Belmullet, Co Mayo records a mean sea level pressure of 967.8 hPa, an August record at the time. The current record, 966.4 hPa, was set in 2020 at Athenry, Co Galway during Storm Ellen.
1979 – The Fastnet Race turns deadly when a fierce storm hits, sinking yachts and claiming 21 lives. It sparks the largest peacetime rescue in the region, mobilising 4,000 rescuers by sea and air.
1983 – Temperatures rise into the mid to high 20s.
1995 – The long dry summer continues, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s widely.
2020 – In a generally warm month, Markree, Co Sligo records the highest temperature for that August at 25.2 °C.
2022 – A six-day heatwave at seven Met Éireann stations ends as thundery rain brings cooler weather.
