A timeline of notable weather events and extremes that have taken place in Ireland on August 16th throughout history.

1976: Kilkenny and Birr recorded 26°C as a warm, dry spell continued.

1985: Mullingar recorded only its sixth dry day out of the past 40, following one of the wettest Julys on record.

1995: Temperatures reached the mid to high 20s as the long, hot summer continued.

2003: Many of Met Éireann’s synoptic stations entered their third week without any measurable rainfall.

2008: Heavy rainfall and scattered thunderstorms caused flooding and major travel disruption across much of Ireland. Torrential rain brought severe flooding to all parts, with routes including stretches of the M4 and numerous regional roads across Northern Ireland closed. Bridge damage was reported in Tipperary, with widespread impacts in Wicklow, Louth, Monaghan and Waterford.

2016: The month’s highest temperature, 26°C, was recorded in Drumconnick, Co Cavan.

2022: Following Ireland’s record-hot August period, with a peak of 31.7°C earlier in the week, a breakdown in conditions brought thunderstorms across the country.
