Fivefold Rainfall in East as Northwest Stays Dry

Rainfall totals across Ireland varied sharply over the past seven days, according to Met Éireann, with some parts of the country deluged by significantly higher than average rain, while others remained comparatively dry.

Casement Aerodrome in Dublin recorded the highest rainfall of the week at 67.7mm—more than five times the seasonal norm for the area. In stark contrast, just 3.9mm of rain fell at Belmullet in County Mayo, representing only a quarter of the average for this time of year.

The national meteorological service says the coming week is expected to bring a spell of more settled weather, with rainfall amounts forecast to remain below normal in most parts of the country.

Air temperatures last week were generally close to or slightly above average for late July. Mean air temperatures ranged between 15°C and 16.8°C, while soil temperatures were notably high, ranging from 16.6°C to 18.9°C. Similar conditions are expected to persist over the next week, with no significant changes forecast.

Despite the bursts of heavy rainfall in some areas, the week was notably dull across the country. Sunshine totals were below normal nationwide, with Knock Airport recording just 5.1 hours of sunshine over the seven-day period. Cork Airport, by comparison, fared best with 23.5 hours of sunshine, still well below what is typical for the time of year. Met Éireann forecasts a mostly cloudy outlook for the week ahead, meaning sunshine amounts are again likely to fall below average.
