West Still Waterlogged Despite National Drying

Met Éireann’s latest farming commentary suggests that while changeable weather continues across the country, there will be valuable opportunities for drying and spraying over the coming days.

Moderate to good drying conditions are forecast to persist for much of the working week, with frequent dry spells between passing showers. Winds are expected to remain light to moderate, supporting some useful spraying windows, particularly during prolonged settled periods.

Soil conditions vary widely across the country. Most soils currently show soil moisture deficits ranging from 5 to 55mm. However, in parts of the west and northeast, well and moderately drained soils are nearing saturation. Poorly drained soils in these areas are already saturated or waterlogged, complicating fieldwork and access.

Looking ahead, further mixed conditions are expected, but long dry periods will contribute to increasing deficits. By the end of the week, soil moisture deficits are projected to rise to between 30 and 60mm in most areas. Despite this, soils in the west and northeast may continue to struggle with near-saturated conditions due to persistent localised rainfall.

Meanwhile, mean soil temperatures are forecast to remain above normal, which will aid grass growth and crop development where ground conditions allow.
