Galway City Museum Marks World Oceans Day

To mark World Oceans Day and this year’s theme, “Wonder”, Galway City Museum will host Ocean Celebration Week from Monday, 2 June to Friday, 6 June 2025.
The week-long programme, organised in collaboration with the Marine Institute and Galway Atlantaquaria, promises a series of free, family-friendly events designed to inspire curiosity and deepen public engagement with Ireland’s marine environment.
The celebration includes a mix of interactive exhibits, lunchtime talks, and outdoor beach activities, offering something for all ages—from budding young explorers to seasoned ocean enthusiasts.
“Ocean Celebration Week is a brilliant opportunity for people of all ages to discover more about the sea and its importance in our daily lives,” said Lea Delhaise, a Marine Institute-funded graduate intern at Galway City Museum. “I’m excited to help deliver events that make marine science accessible, fun, and meaningful for our community. The theme of ‘Wonder’ really captures what we hope people will feel—a sense of awe and curiosity about our ocean world.”
Highlights of the week include a beach exploration at Grattan Beach, a talk on marine birds under environmental pressure, and presentations on whales and dolphins, as well as the stories behind marine photography.
The Marine Institute also continues its close partnership with the museum through its long-running exhibition, The Wild Atlantic – Sea Science. This immersive, hands-on experience offers visitors a chance to learn about marine biodiversity, ocean exploration, and the vital role of ocean science in environmental protection.
