New figures from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) reveal that lifeboats based in , Galway City, and the Aran Islands launched 104 times in 2024, coming to the aid of 94 people.

Of these launches, 38 took place during the hours of darkness.

Across the island of Ireland, RNLI crews responded to 881 incidents last year, rescuing 1,007 people, according to RNLI Area Operations Manager . Of these launches, 234 occurred at night.

“Usually it’s our lifeboat crews heading out to respond to Mayday calls, but now we’re the ones asking for help,” Mr O’Connor said. “Thousands of people get into danger on and around the water each year and need our help, but everything we do is only possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters.”

Highlighting the activity at the three County Galway stations, O’Connor added: “The demand for our services remains high, with our lifesavers dropping everything to respond when the call comes. As we head into our busiest season, we’re appealing for public support to ensure we can continue providing this vital service.”

To help raise funds, the RNLI is encouraging people to take part in the Mayday Mile campaign this May. Whether participants choose to walk, jog, hop, or skip a mile each day, all funds raised will go towards supporting the charity’s lifesaving work.
